World Assembly of Youth - WAY

BACKGROUND

In August 1949, an initiative was undertaken to establish a youth organisation to promote global cooperation and understanding amongst the young people of the world. Recognising the need for a universal youth organisation, youth leaders from national youth councils of all member countries of the United Nations, were invited to attend an international conference in London at Westminster Hall in London that established the World Assembly of Youth (WAY).

WAY recognises the Universal Declaration of Human Rights as the basis of its action and services. WAY works for promotion of youth and youth organisations in programme areas such as: youth employment, environment, human rights, democracy, population, health, drugs, community development and leadership training. WAY provides opportunities for youth representatives from different countries to exchange ideas and experiences, coordinate international, regional and local programs and promotes understanding notwithstanding differences due to racial, beliefs or socio-political national background.

WAY being the international coordinating body of national youth councils and organisations from over one hundred twenty countries around the world and in existence for 60 years is in itself an achievement. WAY’s relevance will continue into the future, thus the need to continuously re-align and re-invent itself to face the unprecedented and unpredictable global youth challenges. This can only be achieved though the support of all governments, nongovernmental agencies and WAY’s global members and associates.

Beyond any reasonable doubt, WAY has played a significant role in various capacities and levels. WAY has offered a platform to nurture global leaders and thus throughout the 60 years, numerous youth leaders have become noteworthy and major contributors to society through their association and involvement with WAY. The WAY 60th Anniversary Celebration will highlight on these socio-economic and political involvement of various individuals that make the difference.
