130 million young people still illiterate PDF Print E-mail
Young people offer a “demographic window of opportunity” to help solve world crises yet they are still held back by lack of education and poverty. On August 12 International Youth Day will take as its theme Sustainability: our challenge, our future.

A message from UNESCO Director-General Mr Koïchiro Matsuura draws attention to the fact that youth make up more than 18 per cent of the world’s population and with their ambition, energy and improving levels of education have strong potential to address environmental, societal and economic challenges.

However, 130 million young people remain illiterate, 200 million live on less than one dollar a day and 10 million live with HIV and AIDS.
