Six post-graduate students at the Institute of International Relations, University of the West Indies, St. Augustine Campus, will represent the English-speaking Caribbean at the first annual Global Model United Nations Conference, which will be held in Geneva, Switzerland from 5 to 7 August 2009.
The theme of the conference is “The Millennium Development Goals: Lifting the Bottom Billion out of Poverty”. The UWI delegates to the Conference - Stefan Affonso, Crystal Bastien, Ornal Barman, Julianna Baptiste, Elizabeth Encinas and Kobina Wilson – have been selected from the top Post-Graduate students at the Institute of International Relations. They will join more than 1000 other university students (ages 18 to 24) from approximately 60 countries. Participants have been drawn from Member States where national Model United Nations programmes are currently organised.
Through the Model United Nations process, students are exposed to the workings of the Organisation and also develop leadership, research, writing, problem-solving, and negotiation skills that they will use throughout their lives. It is expected that the demands of a global Conference will render the experience even more rewarding for participants.
The Global Conference will be a simulation of United Nations General Assembly plenary sessions and the Assembly’s Main Committees. Delegates will role-play as foreign diplomats and participate in simulated sessions of the United Nations General Assembly and other multilateral bodies in the United Nations System.
The global conference will initially target university-level students and will rotate annually to major United Nations duty stations, particularly in developing countries.
