Program will provide training, on-the-job experience, information dissemination and labor intermediation servicesservices.
Jamaica will obtain support from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) for a program to assist young people in the transition to adulthood and the world of work. Approximately one in three Jamaican youths are unemployed, more than three times the adult average.
An US$11 million loan from the IDB, the world’s largest regional development institution, will help finance training and on-the-job experience services for young Jamaicans.
The IDB resources will support activities in the following strategic areas:
* enhancement of job and life skills training offered by the National Youth Service, including pilot projects to test new ways to address the needs of young people with low levels of literacy and numeracy; * promotion of youth centers to increase access to information, technology and training opportunities; and * institutional strengthening, including technical assistance to support governance and articulation between various sectors.
This multiphase operation will provide long-term financial and technical support over a minimum period of eight years.
