9th MELAKA INTERNATIONAL YOUTH DIALOGUE

“YOUTH AND GENDER EQUALITY”

BACKGROUND

The Melaka International Youth Dialogue (MIYD) is an annual programme of the World Assembly of Youth (WAY) which brings together young people and youth leaders from around the world to discuss pertinent youth issues. Since 2001, the MIYD has been convened on a wide range of topical issues. More than 2,000 young people have attended the MIYD since its inception. The MIYD produces a declaration which serves as a guideline for youth to address the selected issues.

MIYD 2009 THEME

The theme selected for MIYD 2009 is Youth and Gender Equality. This theme has been selected in realization of the need to educate, increase awareness, to promote gender equality among youth. All countries are affected by the consequences of gender equality. However, with this selected theme all young people, youth leaders, government and organization officers will gather to call for action in areas such as: Assessing the problem; Tackling the problem; Forging partnership; Focusing on special needs; Sending the right message; and Building experience.

OBJECTIVES

The objectives of MIYD 2009 are:

•   To achieve a behaviour modification amongst youth;
•   To promote equality of opportunities between young women and young men in all its functions;
•   To eliminate unlawful discrimination and harassment on ground of sex amongst youth;
•   To increase youth awareness of their responsibilities regarding the gender equality;

•   To promote equal access to decision-making amongst youth;
•   To provide and create gender-positive media message amongst youth;
•   To improve the national and international policies that deal with the gender equality and its effects on society;
•   To recommend improvements to the current systems of education for youth worldwide on gender equality;
•   To improve cooperation between governments, civil society and private sector to address gender equality;
•   To have a stronger, more effective national youth councils with leading roles in the fight against gender inequality.

ORGANISERS

The MIYD is organized by the World Assembly of Youth in collaboration with the Melaka State Government, Malaysian Youth Council, Ministry of Youth and Sports (Malaysia), Asian Youth Council and Committee for ASEAN Youth Cooperation.

PARTICIPANTS

WAY invites participants from National Youth Councils, Youth Organisations, Ministries of Youth, etc. National delegations are encouraged to register gender-balanced groups. There is no specific age limit but delegations are encouraged to include young people below the age of 30. The total number of participants in this programme shall be 200 from at least 70 different countries.

REGISTRATION

All delegates should register with the WAY secretariat by the 10th June 2009. Registrations shall be considered on a first-come-first-served basis. Once all places are full registration will be closed. All details of flight information should be received by WAY by 15th June 2009.

PARTICIPATION FEE

A participation fee of U$150 (one hundred and fifty US dollars), inclusive of registration fee, twin-sharing accommodation and food shall be levied on all participants. This fee is payable in advance or on arrival.
