The CNYJ targets Caribbean journalists between the ages of 21 and 30. In its initial phase, foundational reporting courses were conducted in Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica and Grenada. It is expected that the exercise will eventually span all countries in which there is ACM membership.

The Caribbean Network of Young Journalists (CNYJ) Project is being executed by the Association of Caribbean MediaWorkers, in collaboration National Commissions for UNESCO in the Caribbean; the Caribbean News Agency (CANA); Caribbean Media Corporation (CMC); the University of the West Indies, Mona School of Business – Media Research Unit and national and regional representative media organisations.

It is funded by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).

The ACM plans, through this project, to optimise its existing network which includes Caribbean journalists, journalism trainers, media advocates, journalists’ organisations and media houses, to promote higher professional standards among young journalists and to generate greater awareness of the developmental impacts of media outputs.

A qualitative survey of professional expectations and needs among the target group in the wider Caribbean is also being conducted. The CNYJ will facilitate information/knowledge sharing in the profession.

The ACM is also introducing and pilot testing UNESCO’s Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) Media Training and Resource Kit which can be downloaded from this site.

Among the specific activities included in this project are:

Evaluation of the professional needs and expectations of young journalists through a process of representative sampling in selected territories;

Expansion of the ACM’s current online reach and enhancement of the quality of its online presence to focus on the specific needs and achievements of young journalists;

The conduct of a series of in-country training programmes.

Testing of UNESCO’s Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) Media Training and Resource Kit;

Development of an online capacity to monitor and review the performance of members of the Caribbean Network of Young Journalists.
