This course aims to develop competencies of human resources from governmental and non-governmental organizations to integrate HIV and VAW in prevention, treatment and care intersections, as well as to respond to emerging policy issues regarding both problems.
HIV/AIDS and violence against women (VAW) are pervasive problems putting women's health and welfare at risk in the Caribbean. Recognizing the intersection of these two problems in a wide range of adverse impacts, the Inter-American Commission of Women (CIM/OAS), Development Connections, UNIFEM, and the Caribbean Association for Feminist Research and Action (CAFRA) are launching the online course "Empowerment, HIV and violence against women in the Caribbean." The program has four modules: 1. Conceptual framework: intersections between HIV and VAW, international commitments and national legislation, empowerment approach applied to HIV and VAW. 2. Prevention: prevention strategies from a public health approach, best/promising practices on HIV and VAW prevention, and multi-sectoral linkages and community participation. 3. Care and treatment: voluntary counseling and testing, access to treatment, adherence strategies and VAW, perinatal transmission and VAW, and integrating HIV within VAW services such as screening, care, referral systems, and support groups. 4. Considerations for special populations: Pregnant women, adolescents, migrants (including victims of trafficking in persons), sex workers, and prisoners. Learning resources: Guidelines, cases, databases, checklists and other assessment tools, forums, bibliography, and glossary.
