BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS: Gov't signs agreement to fund student loan scheme. On Thursday Government officials signed a $5 million loan agreement with the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) to fund a student loan scheme for BVIslanders/Belongers. Full article

BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS: Teenagers arrested for burglarising Sea Cow's Bay schools. Police have arrested and charged three teenagers in connection with the burglary of the Seventh Day Adventist School and Ebenezer Thomas Primary School in Sea Cow’s Bay on Feb. Full article

BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS: Education Week ceremony. The Department of Education and Culture is inviting the general public to the opening ceremony of Education Week on Sunday, March 9 at the Sir Rupert Briercliffe Hall at 3:30 p.m.  The week is being observed under the theme “Building Collaborative Teams for Teaching and Learning”. CUBA: Fidel Thanks Young Cuban Writer for Book on his Father's Life. Comrade Fidel Castro on Sunday sent a message to the Round Table prime-time radio and television program thanking young writer Katiuska Blanco for the love and respect with which she wrote a book on his father, Angel Castro, which was presented during the last day of the Havana segment of the Cuba 2008 International Book Fair. JAMAICA: Teachers endorse newspapers as educational tool. High school teachers from the Corporate Area, participating in a Newspaper in Education (NIE) training seminar held at The Gleaner Company's North Street offices yesterday, were very receptive to the idea of using such media as an aid to teaching in the classroom. JAMAICA:  Abuse at home forces kids into child labour, says trade unionist. President of the Bustamante Industrial Trade Union (BITU), Kavan Gayle, says that the abuse of children in their homes was among the primary factors forcing them onto the streets and into child labour. Full article

JAMAICA: 69 students arrested for truancy. OLD HARBOUR, St Catherine - Sixty-nine students from various schools in Old Harbour were arrested for truancy last Friday, after they were found loitering in two game shops in Old Harbour while their schools were in session. Full article

NETHERLAND ANTILLES: Ujima may be forced to close centre for delinquent youths. Ujima Foundation may have to close its centre for delinquent youth as early as the end of this month, unless government steps in right away with promised help, foundation president Dr. Judith Arndell has been reported as saying. STA LUCIA: RISE aims to teach youth life skills. After a series of consultations island-wide, RISE (Respect Initiative Social Health Education) Inc will be host a two-day conference starting today until Wednesday to finalize the proposal to the government of St Lucia. Full article

SEX, drug abuse, violence and deviant behaviour in several schools, all perpetrated by the students themselves, have left officials of both the Trinidad and Tobago Unified Teachers’ Association (TTUTA) and the National Parent Teacher Association (NPTA), expressing disappointment and major concern.
