BAHAMAS: School boy stabbed to death. A 17-year-old student of C.C. Sweeting Sr. High School was stabbed to death yesterday afternoon in an on-campus fight involving a 12th grader and an 11th grader of the school. Full article

BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS: Elmore Stoutt High School Career Expo to begin on Monday. “Pursuing Purposeful and Profitable Productivity” will be this year’s theme for the Elmore Stoutt High School (ESHS) 2008 Career Expo which is slated to begin on Monday, February 18. Full article

BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS: Two BVI youths selected for Beijing Olympic Youth Camp. The British Virgin Islands Olympic Committee has selected two participants from a field of six recommended by its member federations and associations, to attend the Beijing Olympic Games Youth Camp during August, in China. BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS: Softball camp for children ages 10-19 years. The Department of Youth Affairs and Sports is hosting a “Softball Camp” for children between the ages of 10-19 years of age to teach the fundamentals of softball.  The camp will take place on March 31st – April 12th 2008. CUBA: Cuba University Congress for Justice. Over 1,000 teachers and researchers in Cuba for five days are to emphasize Tuesday quality of higher education and access with social justice. Full article

CUBA: Universities are Key to the 21st Century Society. “Societies with a better educated population will be in a much more favourable position to deal with the challenges of this century,” said Cuban Minister of Higher Education Juan Vela Valdes at the opening of the Sixth International Congress on Higher Education Universidad 2008. CUBA: Challenges for Latin American Universities. In all of Latin America and the Caribbean only 14 million people are studying at the higher education level and 60 percent of the university students are concentrated in three countries: Mexico, Brazil and Argentina. JAMAICA: High-school students to experience life at Northern Caribbean University (NCU). Approximately 50 schools will be represented at this year's 'College Day', to be held on Tuesday at Northern Caribbean University (NCU). The annual event, which is coordinated by the Freshman Advisement and Recruitment Department of the university, facilitates the convergence of high-school students from across the island on the institution's main campus for a full day of exposure to the university's offerings. JAMAICA: Teenage mothers say pregnancies unplanned, accidental — Report. Results from a survey involving 881 girls between the ages of 12 and 17 attending women's centres in seven parishes have shown all the girls saying their pregancies were "unplanned" or "accidental". The data also showed that the majority of the girls' mothers had themselves been teenage mothers. Full article

STA LUCIA:  Youth sentenced to six years. Shervon Ramsey first appeared in court a couple of years ago before former Magistrate Horace Frazer. Then he had been charged with possession of an illegal firearm and one round of ammunition. Ramsey, who had actually been four days short of his seventeenth birthday when he was charged for the offence had been incarcerated in the absence of a secure juvenile facility at the male prison.
