BAHAMAS: 37 scholarships to be awarded. The Ministry of Education announced yesterday that only 37 out of nearly 500 applicants would be receiving scholarships for four different national awards that are given to the brightest and best students each year. Full article

BARBADOS: Suicide is leading cause of death in Guyana. Guyana has formed a body to reduce the high number of suicides in the country. People taking their own lives has been declared as a major public health issue and a leading cause of death in the CARICOM member state. The Ministry of Health has established a National Suicide Prevention Committee (NSPC). Full article

BERMUDA: Lower fees for students studying in the UK. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office has confirmed that Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have now agreed provisions that will enable students from British Overseas Territories to benefit from home fee status for further education and undergraduate degree courses. BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS: HLSCC vice president calls for student commitment. Vice President of H. Lavity Stoutt Community College Dr. Karl Dawson has urged students not to take their attendance at the institution lightly and to remain committed to their studies throughout their college life. BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS: 230 new students at HLSCC. Students receiving a free college education in the Virgin Islands should take the privilege seriously, HLS Community College Vice President Dr. Karl Dawson said at the school’s orientation Monday. So far, about 230 new students have registered to attend the college during this year’s fall semester, according to a statement released by HLSCC. Full article

CAYMAN ISLANDS: Children locked up in harsh conditions. Children in the Cayman Islands as young as 14 are being housed in cells that are smaller than the average bathroom. Full article

CAYMAN ISLANDS: Key Leaders sought. The Kiwanis Club of Grand Cayman is planning its first Key Leader event. Key Leader is a weekend leadership experience for youth leaders. It focuses on service leadership as the first, most meaningful leadership–development experience. CAYMAN ISLANDS: Worldclass planned Athletic Facilities. Cayman’s athletes and schoolchildren are expected to soon be fitted out with world–class sporting facilities, an International Amateur Athletic Federation certified track and two FIFA–certified football fields. Full article

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC: Gender violence affects women. Santo Domingo.- The National District Attorney General’s Office says that 85% of gender violence reports received between the months of January and July this year involve violence against women. Full article

JAMAICA: Cracking down on crime. Jamaica does not have a major crime problem. This, some might say, ridiculous statement is actually true. Then again, it obviously is not. While our rates of burglary, fraud, or public mischief are not particularly alarming, where Jamaica continues, and embarrassingly so, to set world-record rates is in murder and violent crimes. St LUCIA: Corrupt police at the center of crime problem? Grass Street and Wilton’s Yard are well known as hotspots for gang-related criminal activity. Castries Central MP Richard Frederick has embarked on an initiative to bring about peace among the gangs of those two communities. Full article

The Department of Youth Affairs who have just concluded the National Youth Forum earlier this year with the battle cry “Finding our voice, Making a difference” still has a lot of fruitful and meaningful activities for the youths of the country as it continues to recognize the vital role youths play in shaping the nation. TURKS & CAICOS: Jadot Cup raises money to help fund New Provo Youth Center. The Turks and Caicos AIDS Awareness Foundation (TCAAF) got $20,000 closer to realizing its dream of opening a youth center in Providenciales as a result of the Jadot Cup held recently. The popular golf tournament (now in its eight year) and associated events attracted a wide cross-section of the community while also raising a significant amount of money. Full article

US VIRGIN ISLANDS: Storm warning doesn't deter youths' Night Out against crime. ST. THOMAS - A looming storm did little to stop St. Thomas youngsters dedicated to eradicating violence in the territory from marching down the waterfront on Friday evening, then letting loose in Frenchtown. The 20th annual Night Out was a big success, despite being threatened by bad weather brought on by Hurricane Dean. Full article
