The objectives of the training also were to equip participants with the tools they will need to develop a life plan for the next 10 years of their lives using the interactive and participatory methodologies and to raise the importance of goal-setting among the young people.
The Commonwealth Youth Programme Caribbean Centre (CYPCC) has fulfilled a promise to provide training to several young Amerindians of the hinterland villages of Orellana and Siparuta in Guyana, in 'Developing a Life Plan'.

CYPCC Regional Director, Mr Henry Charles made the promise during a recent presentation ceremony at which CYPCC donated two fully loaded computer systems to the Amerindian hostel in  the Town of Corriverton, located on the bank of the Corentyne River which borders Suriname,

Commonwealth Youth for Positive Living (CYPL) Intern, Ms Natasha Grovesnor, and CYPLs Keeran Williams, Emmanuel Livan and Shellon Spencer traveled to Corriverton and facilitated the sessions on May 26 and 27 for about 30 young people between 9 and 16 years old.

The training was done at the FACT office, an NGO in Corriverton, exposing participants to training skills which were said to be important if one is to optimize his/ her potential for achieving success. The young people were also asked to identify hindrances and stepping stones which can impact on achievement of their life goals.

Each CYPL was tasked with facilitating a working group, walking each participant through the stages in developing a life plan and having them write down their life goals. For the participants, this process involved setting short-term goals, identifying the steps needed to be undertaken for achieving them, and challenging themselves by setting a deadline for achieving the specific goal. They were also asked to write down the hindrances and come up with possible solutions for overcoming these obstacles.

The objectives of the training also were to equip participants with the tools they will need to develop a life plan for the next 10 years of their lives using the interactive and participatory methodologies and to raise the importance of goal-setting among the young people.

Meanwhile, CYPCC also promised to undertake an initial visit to Orealla and Siparuta during June 21 to 23 to better inform areas of support to youth for Enterprise Development training and other leadership and development training. In principle, CYPCC is hoping to develop and run a customized Enterprise Development programme to meet the needs of the two villages in support of their current and potential business initiatives.

CYPCC will also customize and deliver a one week leadership and life skills interactive session for students at the hostel and others in Corriverton in Grades 7-9 during July 30 to August 04.
