Initial message and received greetings PDF Print E-mail

jovenDifferent institutions and personalities have sent messages of support and recognition to us on the formal inauguration of this Portal of Youth, that we much appreciate and value. Next, some of the mentioned messages, after our initial message.

Message from the Director

Starting on August 12, 2005, we initiate this works, with the edition of the Portal of Youth for Latin America and the Caribbean in spanish, we would dream with the possibility of editing it in other languages, specially portuguese and English. Finally, today part of that dream comes true, with the starting of this edition in English, that is not precisely a simple copy of the spanish version; actually, they are two complementary versions, while one of them gives information –specially- on countries from Hispanic America, the other one makes it –mainly- on the countries of the Anglo-speaker Caribbean.

In any case, we hope to achieve a bigger and better integration among both regions, culturally and historically distant, and at the same time, we hope that all of our diverse realities become more and better known in the whole world, and we are aware that this version in English will help us a lot in this sense. We also know, that this is only going to be possible if we get this version to be appropiated (felt as one’s own) by part of the eventual users and associates of this new adventure, in the same way that has happened (in less than two years) with the spanish version, that has almost 3.000 daily visits, already coming closer to the first million of visitors accumulated in this period.

Hopefully by this road (one more among many already existent and/or to build) the many bridges that we need might be built in order for Latin America and the Caribbean to be –effectively- a big space of meeting, interchange and mutual support among all towns in general and among our young men in particular. We count on you and hope for everybody to be active protagonists in this important task.

Message from the Director Commonwealth Youth Programme Caribbean Centre

A QUIET REVOLUTION WITH PROFOUND SIGNFICANCE

Very often history is created in a quiet and almost invisible manner and only becomes recognizable when the ripples of effect carve their own space in the pool of reality.

This much can be said about the recent launching of the Latin American and Caribbean Youth Portal, www.youthlac.org/index.php .

The launching of this youth portal did not make the headlines of major newspapers. It did not receive the public endorsement of the principal movers and shakers of the Global economic and political system. It did not draw attention away from the daily diet of intolerance, conflict and violence.

We yearn to live in a world driven by enlightenment, spiritual enrichment, social progress and economic prosperity.

Yet various events and eventualities conspire continuously to accentuate and even distort our cultural, ethnic and geographical diversities.   Conferences and treaties, too many to index; have pursued the seemingly illusive dream of peaceful co-existence.

I remain optimistic the launching of this portal and the unprecedented opportunity and space it provides for young people to share their ideas, aspirations and challenges will have a profound impact on the development of a culture of peace, tolerance and understanding.

It for this reason I wish to congratulate the architects and sponsors of this historically significant initiative.

The Commonwealth Youth Programme Caribbean Centre is therefore honoured to be part of this initiative.

Please be assured of our profound appreciation and expressions of our highest consideration.

Towards a culture of enlightenment, tolerance, peace and understanding!!

From the Information Society Division of UNESCO:

Access to information does not define itself only in terms of access to different IT technologies, but must take into account the nature and type of information youth need for full participation in society. UNESCO is therefore actively assisting partners and young people to produce information themselves by supporting youth media, by facilitating the creation youth information and communication networks, and by providing appropriate technologies to youth organisations.

A flagship project for UNESCO is INFOYOUTH (www.infoyouth.org), a worldwide information network of government authorities, relevant agencies and youth organizations on youth-related issues, which seeks to make knowledge, experience and analysis of youth policies and issues available to all.

As part of this Network, several regional Youth Internet Portals have been launched, and we are particularly pleased to note the excellent results obtained in the framework of the Portal for Latin America and the Caribbean, which now goes live in English after having addressed mainly the Spanish speaking users and countries.

Its creation reflected the major concern to secure better conditions for young people to access information. By collecting and providing information concerning the different youth activities and projects at regional level, the Youth Portal for Latin America and the Caribbean is successfully meeting the constantly increasing needs of young people, youth NGOs and of other various institutions dealing with youth, for updated and reliable information.

Thanks again to all involved for this accomplishment.
