Family Health International PDF Print E-mail

Worldwide, young women and men suffer a disproportionate share of unplanned pregnancies, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including HIV, and other serious reproductive health problems. Family Health International (FHI) works with partner organizations worldwide to address persistent challenges that influence the health conditions and quality of services available to youth.

FHI has conducted research on adolescent reproductive health since the late 1970s, and currently conducts HIV/AIDS intervention programs and collaborates on research, training, intervention, and information programs related to adolescent reproductive health with organizations in Latin America, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia.

YouthNet   - http://www.fhi.org/en/Youth/YouthNet/index.htm
YouthNet is a global, USAID-sponsored program to improve reproductive health and prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS among people 10 to 24 years old. It is a collaboration with young people, parents, schools, employers, policymakers, health professionals, faith-based programs, and community leaders. Most importantly, YouthNet involves youth in every aspect of the program. Read more about YouthNet.

IMPACT Project  - http://www.fhi.org/en/HIVAIDS/Projects/res_IMPACT+main+page.htm
Many young people are aware of how to safeguard themselves from HIV and other sexually transmitted infections, but they haven't taken steps to better protect themselves. FHI's IMPACT Project works to promote healthy lifestyles, including discussion of abstinence, among young people in the process of forming their sexual attitudes and behavior. Read more about IMPACT.

Contraceptive Technology Project  - http://www.fhi.org/en/rh/programs/ctfprp_rp.htm
As part of FHI's USAID-supported contraceptive technology work, FHI has conducted nearly 70 projects on adolescent reproductive health. One highlight, funded by the David and Lucile Packard Foundation, is the Healthy Adolescent Project in India (HAPI). A collaborative effort with the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts, HAPI allows adolescent Scouts and Guides to work through a reproductive and general health curriculum and earn a 'Healthy Adolescent' merit badge after completion. The Scouts and Guides then share health information with other adolescents by working as peer educators in their communities. HAPI builds upon FHI's Health of Adolescent Refugees Project (HARP), an earlier peer education project with adolescent refugees in Egypt, Uganda, and Zambia. Read more about HARP.
